Itinerary OEUK Tour

This tour will visit the OEUK 2010 Exposition for two days while traveling throughout Korea to witness the full breadth of Korean ceramics.  We will meet the artists in their studios.

While this tour is looking for ceramic artist participants, it is open to anyone interested in witnessing one of the oldest ceramic forms in the world.  In addition to attending this new Onggi Exposition - the first of its kind, you will also travel to many of Korea’s more important ceramic areas and will meet personally many of the Human Cultural Treasures and other outstanding ceramic artists of Korea.  An optional extension of four-days to China where you will meet with some of China’s best teapot artists in YiXing is also available.

Onggi is Korea’s oldest and perhaps most fascinating ceramic art form.  In 2010, Ulsan City will hold the first annual Onggi Exposition.  It is called “OEUK 2010” or Onggi Exposition Ulsan, Korea.  The dates of the expo are pending.  This is a great opportunity for ceramic artists throughout the world to witness Korea’s only ceramic art form with an unbroken history from prehistoric times.

At one time we thought onggi was dying out in Korea.  It was reported that the only remaining onggi artists were in their sixties.  But some families such as the Kim family in Yeoju, the Lee family in Bosong and the onggi potter’s village in Ulsan remained, though greatly diminished.  In addition, contemporary artists are learning and using the onggi methods in creating some really interesting work.   If you have ever seen an onggi ceramic artist work you know the power of their ability.

You will also visit other onggi ceramic artists such as Kim Il Mann’s Father and Son’s Studio that may be the only onggi studio that has stepped back to all the old ways of working.  We have not seen these methods for thirty years and they are amazing.  Kim Il Mann is a Human Cultural Treasure who uses coils to form his work.  Their dragon kiln is also a cultural treasure see our Ceramics Photos page.   You will also visit Lee Hak Soo in Bosong.  Lee Hak Soo uses the slab method for forming onggi.  His studio is close to Gangjin the celadon center of Korea.  They are helping to subsidize the tour.

Autumn is also the time for the famous Andong International Mask Dance Festival which is claimed to be “the most memorable, fascinating and fun times to be in Korea”.  You won’t want to miss it or the other major ceramic centers and museums of Korea.
